Richard Reeves is president of the American Institute for Boys and Men, which he founded in 2023 to raise awareness of the problems of boys and men and advocate for effective solutions. 

His 2022 book, Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do About It, was described as a “landmark” in The New York Times and named a book of the year by both The Economist and The New Yorker. It was also included on President Barack Obama’s summer reading list.

Richard is also non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, where he previously directed the Future of the Middle-Class Initiative and the Center on Children and Families. His research focuses on boys and men, inequality, and social mobility.

Richard writes for a wide range of publications, including the New York Times, Guardian, National Affairs, The Atlantic, Democracy Journal, and Wall Street Journal. His previous books include Dream Hoarders (2017), and John Stuart Mill – Victorian Firebrand (2007), an intellectual biography of the British liberal philosopher and politician. He is co-author with Jonathan Juravich of Yes, Boys Can!: Inspiring Stories of Men Who Changed the World – He Can H.E.A.L. aimed at inspiring boys to enter professions such as health and education (Quarto, Oct 2024).

 

In September 2017, Politico magazine named Richard one of the top 50 thinkers in the U.S. for his work on class and inequality.

A Brit-American, Richard was director of strategy to the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister from 2010 to 2012. Other previous roles include director of Demos, the London-based political think-tank; social affairs editor of the Observer; principal policy advisor to the Minister for Welfare Reform, and research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research. Richard is also a former European Business Speaker of the Year. He has a BA from Oxford University and a PhD from Warwick University.
